"La Selezione del Sindaco 2010' (The Mayor’s Selection 2010), the itinerant oenological contest organized by Città del Vino (Cities of Wine), will be held in Brindisi; the Apulian city will thus become the Capital of Wine for three days, from the 21st to the 23rd of May. Tenute Rubino and other important local firms have been called upon to welcome the vast international delegation which will arrive for this occasion in Salento’s City of Wine.

This edition marks the 9th installment of an event which is acquiring an increasingly international perspective: not only the participation of both Italian an European producers is increasing, but for the first time a veritable 'oenological exchange' will take place with the wines of Quinhuangdao, first City of Wine in China; the presence of Chinese and South Korean jurors amid the French, German, Austrian, Slovenian, Hungarian and American ones is also a novelty.

In its travels among the Cities of Wine, where each Mayor takes the role of testimonial for the territory’s producers, this itinerant contest has awarded and valorized many great wines, along with their birthplaces.

The importance placed on the bond between wine and territory, together with the higher degree of internationalism achieved by this 9th edition, represent the two distinctive traits through which this contest blends seamlessly and naturally into the viticultural productive reality of Apulia. It seems just as natural for such a union to be represented by Tenute Rubino, a firm with strong roots in this territory and a well-established international outlook.

Jaddico estate: Tenute Rubino presents the viticulture of Salento

Thanks to its modern business model, Tenute Rubino is one of the firms chosen to represent Apulian oenological excellence and to welcome the delegation of international jurors. In Apulia – and in Salento in particular – firms and communities have traditionally built their economy on grapevine cultivation; it is in this historical framework that firms such as Tenute Rubino have developed entrepreneurial projects which have given birth to high-quality wines, with intense Mediterranean characteristics and ready to take on international markets worldwide.

The selection of Brindisi as host to the contest is the acknowledgment of the vast consensus and visibility which this territory and its firms are garnering, both in Italy and abroad, thanks to their efforts and the quality of their products. 'For Brindisi’s countryside' – Luigi Rubino explains – it is a great honor to have a chance of presenting its wines, as well as the territories where they are born, to such a diversified and authoritative jury. Our land, sundrenched and surrounded by the sea, has a great vocation for agriculture. This uncontaminated marine environment is fundamental for the quality of our wines, endowing them with absolutely unique aromas and organoleptic characteristics. Our viticulture is based principally upon indigenous varieties and derives its greatest value added from its strong territorial identity, which is perfectly synthesized by the beautiful image of Salento.'

The delegation will visit the cultivations of indigenous varieties Susumaniello and Negroamaro, right next to the Adriatic Sea; it will then be accompanied to the enchanting wine cellars where a pleasant made in Apulia banquet will take place.

On the sidelines of the contest’s tasting sessions, an open tasting will present wine-lovers with an opportunity to sample wines which have taken part to contests organized by Cities of Wine, with the direct recommendations of Italian and international producers, at the Negroamaro Wine Festival.
