Tenute Rubino participates in the event “Sangiovese and its Lineage”
On February 15th, the event “Sangiovese and its Lineage” took place—an in-depth tasting session dedicated to Italy’s most widespread grape variety and other refined wine expressions derived from it. The event was organized by the Murgia Delegation of AIS Puglia.
Luigi Rubino and oenologist Luca Petrelli were invited to attend, providing technical and cultural insights into the preservation of Susumaniello, a variety that descends directly from Sangiovese. A special thanks for the invitation goes to delegate Enzo Carrasso and AIS national board member Giuseppe Baldassarre.
Introducing Susumaniello, Luigi Rubino described it as “wild in nature yet extremely elegant in the glass: opulent but not like Primitivo, austere but not like Negroamaro—its unique characteristics make it instantly recognizable.”
The event’s main grape variety, cultivated nationwide, is the foundation of some of Italy’s most iconic wines and is grown worldwide in great quantity and outstanding quality. The event’s goal was to explore its history and characteristics while laying the foundation for its protection and promotion.
The tasting journey began in Sicily with a sparkling Nerello Mascalese, continued on the island with two distinct interpretations of Frappato, an emblem of the Ragusa area, and the ancient Perricone, rediscovered and enhanced in recent years.
The journey then moved to Calabria with the unmissable Cirò before heading to Puglia, where attendees sampled our Torre Testa 2019, made from Susumaniello grapes cultivated in the Jaddico estate.
The evening then shifted northward to Romagna, featuring two different expressions of Sangiovese, followed by Umbria with more nuances of the variety. The journey concluded in Montalcino, Tuscany, where Sangiovese reaches its pinnacle as Brunello, a wine renowned and cherished worldwide.
